Old Vines Monastrell
D.O. Yecla
Our Flor del Montgó Old Vines Monastrell
is from the D.O Yecla region in the southeast of Spain. The region
lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the central plateau and
so has a dry Mediterranean climate with hot summers and cold winters.
With Monastrell being the indigenous variety of Yecla it is also
by far the most widely cultivated variety, covering more than
80% of the total plantation in the region. Although EU funding
has made re-plantation attractive for the growers, many of these
more than 50 year old Monastrell bush vines are still perserved.
What is even more impressive is that of these Old Monastrell Bush
Vines, several have not been grafted onto phylloxera resistant
rootstocks. These ungrafted vines are known locally as “Pie
Franco”.
